Sugaring tips for dry climates

As all of us who live or visit Denver know, it is dry af here. Here are some tips to help with maintenance for sugaring in a dry climate:
Use the Right Products:
I always recommend that my clients use a chemical exfoliant paired with a moisturizer to keep their skin exfoliated while staying hydrated—especially during the winter months. As we know, dry skin can lead to more ingrown hairs.
Some of my favorite products to recommend are:
- BiON Mandelic Acid Serum
- BiON Salicylic + Glycolic Gel
These are professional-grade skincare products formulated for the face, making them a great option for clients who want higher-end products without an alcohol base.
To complete the routine, I also love recommending the BiON Gelée Mask to help soothe and rebalance the skin.

Chemical Exfoliants > Physical Scrubs:
If you’re especially prone to ingrown hairs, I recommend avoiding physical scrubs.
While scrubs can help remove surface-level dead skin, they usually don’t do much to treat ingrown hairs and can sometimes make irritation worse.
Chemical exfoliants work deeper and more effectively to help prevent and treat ingrown hairs.
Here’s what I recommend based on your skin’s needs:
- Salicylic acid: great for treating and preventing ingrown hairs while calming irritation
- Glycolic acid: helps with exfoliation and skin texture
- Lactic acid: a safe option for pregnant or nursing clients
- Mandelic acid: excellent for helping lighten pigmentation and post-inflammatory marks

Stay Consistent With Your Routine:
Don’t stop exfoliating just because your appointment is over.
It can be hard to stay consistent all month, but your skin will thank you. Regular exfoliation helps prevent dead skin, bacteria, and oil from building up in the follicles, which reduces the chances of ingrown hairs forming.
Staying on top of your routine also helps improve your future sugaring appointments.
Less dead skin means:
- Less buildup for the sugar to stick to
- Better hair removal
- Fewer passes on the skin
- Less discomfort during your appointment
Just remember: always avoid exfoliating for 24–48 hours after your sugaring appointment to allow the skin time to recover.
