What to look for in a good sugaring artist

So you’ve decided to look for a sugaring studio, whether that means you are new to sugaring and want to try it for the first time or you’ve moved and are looking for a new sugarist before your hair gets out of control.
What do you look for in a studio to make sure you have a good experience?
For me and my clients, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment is a huge priority. Half of this job is skill, and the other half is connection. Good bedside manner matters—a lot. If clients don’t feel comfortable, supported, or cared for during a vulnerable appointment, they’re much less likely to come back.
One of my best tips for making sure you have a successful sugaring experience is to read reviews first. Search “sugaring near me” on Google and see who comes up. In Denver, sugaring is still much more niche than traditional waxing, so there are only a handful of studios that specialize in it.
Reading reviews from real clients—especially ones who mention specific service providers and explain why they felt comfortable—is one of the best ways to figure out if someone is skilled in the ways that matter most to you.
Another important thing to look at is experience. If someone has only been sugaring for a month, they’re still learning and refining their technique—which is completely normal. There’s nothing wrong with seeing someone newer, but experience does make a difference.
After a year or more of consistent sugaring experience, most estheticians have had time to improve and fine-tune their skills. That can look like:
- Not pulling hair during the application of the sugar
- Talking clients through the appointment to reduce tension and discomfort
- Applying after-pressure to help minimize pain
- Working more efficiently while still prioritizing results
At the end of the day, the decision is yours. Figure out what matters most to you—comfort, technique, experience, price, location—and start your search from there.
