Welcome to Simply Sugared Aesthetics!

11/17/22

Hey there, I’m Emilie and I own a sugaring business in downtown Denver. I have been sugaring for a year and a half, specializing in Brazilians, and decided to finally go out on my own in August 2022. Currently I rent a suite in Urban Luxury Salons on 16th Street Mall.

Most of my clientele is women, and that being said, I care deeply about empowering everyone who books with me and making them feel comfortable at a very vulnerable appointment.

Sugaring in Denver is pretty niche still and is way less popular than hard wax. Most people haven’t really heard of it, and if they have, they haven’t tried it. Education on the subject is difficult to find in my opinion, so it’s hard to master the skill unless you are dedicated to really teaching yourself what works best for you and your clients. Practicing and listening to feedback from clients is huge! Protecting your body is huger!

I wanted to be able to give women in Denver a comfortable and luxurious experience with someone they feel they can trust with a sensitive area. How many times have we heard from someone that they had a horrible experience at another salon and are scared to try again? That’s where I feel I can help people.

By no means is performing Brazilians life-saving work, but I have a knack for making people feel comfortable and confident that I know what I am doing and can recommend the correct products and services for them after having a traumatic experience somewhere else. They have reservations and need someone who is an expert and does not judge. My favorite thing is when a client tells me they almost gave up on Brazilians before sugaring and now they are in way less pain with ingrowns and irritation!

Sugaring is a self-care service that clients do for themselves. I love promoting and encouraging everyone to do some form of self-care, whatever that looks like. Educating without judgement helps clients get optimal results and builds trust between us!

Will My Hair Growth Thin Out Over Time from Sugaring?

11/22/22

The short answer: Yes, although some people don’t thin out as much as others.

When someone has been shaving and decides to start sugaring, they need to grow their hair out to about a grain of rice long. The first appointment, they may notice that some very small hairs are left behind that the sugar couldn’t adhere to. The esthetician may tweeze these or let them grow and get taken out at the next appointment. This happens because when someone shaves, the hair is not removed by the root so all the hairs are growing at different rates and different stages. These stages are anagen (growing hair), catagen (transitional stage), and telogen (resting hair).

When hairs are removed from the root, they will have to regrow a new hair completely. Everything gets taken out at once, everything grows back in at once, therefore, a smoother result.

Now that we know the stages, why does someone thin out hair regrowth over time?

Sugaring is great at getting pretty small hairs out of the follicles since it can seep into the pore a bit and really wrap itself around the hair. Since sugar doesn’t adhere to live skin, there can be multiple passes on the same area so all the hair can be grabbed. This also means there is much less hair breakage, therefore less ingrowns and being smoother longer.

Over time as someone is consistent with Brazilians performed by a skilled esthetician that cares about good results, the follicles can be traumatized over time, resulting is less hair able to grow back.

Many of my clients have been sugaring for years and no matter how long they wait, they could never grow everything back like it once was because the follicles just won’t work anymore. People with darker hair may need more time than people with light hair for this to happen.

What to Look for in a Good Sugaring Artist

11/29/22

So you’ve decided to look for a sugaring studio, whether that means you are new to sugaring and want to try it for the first time or you’ve moved and are looking for a new sugarist before your hair gets out of control.

What do you look for in a studio so that you have a good experience? For me and my clients, I try to make a very comfortable and welcoming environment. Half of this job is the skill and half is being charismatic. You HAVE to have good bedside manner for clients to want to come back every month.

My best tips for making sure you have a successful appointment is reading reviews first. Google “sugaring near me” and see who pops up. In Denver, there are not that many sugaring studios compared to regular wax so that means there are just a couple of businesses that show up.

Reading reviews from people who name service providers and say exactly why they are comfortable is the best way to tell if someone is skilled in the ways that are important to you.

Another thing to look for is the amount of experience the service provider has. If they have been sugaring for a month, they most likely have things to learn still and may get stuck along the way (not saying there is anything wrong with going to someone who is new, just some things I’ve noticed learning myself). If they have been sugaring a year, they most likely have tweaked their skills to be more advanced. This means they don’t pull hair during the application of the sugar, they talk people through their appointments so they feel less pain, they apply after pressure to the area to make sure you are experiencing the least amount of pain possible.

At the end of the day, the decision is up to you. Decide what the most important factors are to you and get to Googling!

Proper Sugaring Aftercare

12/05/22

What should I be doing after I get sugared? Good question! The main things are no sweating or exfoliating for 24-48 hours, keep the area clean and in baggy clothing, and maintain a good exfoliation schedule between appointments.

Refraining from having sex, working out, and wearing loose, clean clothing within 24-48 hours of your appointment will help prevent reactions or irritation from bacteria. To be able to tell when you can resume your normal routine, check to make sure your pores are not visibly open or have pinpoint bleeding from where the hairs were taken out. Once your hair thins out and you have been sugaring a while, less time will be needed right after your appointment before resuming normal activity.

The best thing for maintenance between appointments is finding the right exfoliant and moisturizer. Talk to your esthetician about what they recommend and buy it from them! Support estheticians over Amazon, always. The best ingredients I can suggest to look for in products is salicylic acid (or lactic acid if you are nursing or pregnant).

I would also recommend using a moisturizer after to make sure your products are not drying you out and causing more damage than good. Drying your skin out can reduce the amount of sebum required to move skin cells, oil, and dirt out of the follicles and can also cause the extra dead skin to clog pores and cause more ingrown hairs.

Sugaring Tips for Dry Climates

12/13/22

As all of us who live or visit Denver know, it is dry af here. Here are some tips to help with maintenance for sugaring in a dry climate:

Use the correct products

I always recommend to all my clients a chemical exfoliant with a moisturizer to make sure they get a good exfoliation but stay moisturized all through the winter. As we know, dry skin can lead to more ingrown hairs. The best products that I recommend to clients are PFB (however, this has an alcohol base so I advise against it for super dry clients) and BiON Salicylic and Glycolic Gel (formulated for the face by a professional skin care brand, perfect for people who want to use a higher end product with no alcohol base). I love to retail Skin Scripts Light Aloe Moisturizer to top it off and balance the skin.

Chemical > Mechanical Exfoliants

If you are super prone to ingrown hairs, I recommend avoiding scrubs. These products are great for exfoliating dead skin, but most likely won’t do anything for ingrown hairs except irritate them. See above for the best serum recommendations! Salicylic and glycolic acid are great for people who need to sooth and get rid of existing ingrowns and prevent new ones. Lactic acid is safe for nursing and pregnant clients.

Keep up your routine

Don’t stop exfoliating after a week out from your appointment. It can be hard to keep up the routine the whole month, but your skin will thank you because it is never getting a chance to build up dead skin and bacteria and form ingrown hairs. Exfoliating thorough the month will also help with the actual sugaring appointments. Less dead skin for the sugar to latch onto means more hairs can come out at once, meaning less passes on the skin and less pain. Always refrain from exfoliating 24-48 hours before and after an appointment.

How Has Sugaring Evolved Over Time?

1/10/23

Can you believe sugaring has been around for centuries? Well, it must be good since Cleopatra herself was rumored to do it! Sugaring was introduced to replace pumice stones and crude razors make from various materials. It left less irritation and also could have been discovered by accident when using sugar to heal wounds (since it is antibacterial).

Ancient Egyptians would use sugar to don fresh smooth faces as a status symbol. Seems like unwanted hair has always been around!

Sugar has been used in the Middle East, Ancient Rome, and Sumeria. If something works great, it stands the test of time. Now, we perform sugaring for all parts of the body. I wonder how Cleopatra would feel about a bikini sugar!

Sugaring is a wonderful way to remove hair and will probably evolve more in our lifetime. As a sugar artist, I am always trying to find the best sugar and techniques to perform quick and efficient hair removal. Visit me at Urban Luxury Salons on 16th St Mall in Downtown Denver and see for yourself why sugaring is queen.

Benefits of a Lash Lift & Tint

10/21/23

Do you love to wake up and go without having to do your eye makeup? A lash lift and tint can help with that! A lash lift will curl your lashes to look longer and the tint will make them darker and appear fuller. This gives the look of wearing mascara without actually having to put it on.

Results can last 6-8 weeks and after the first 24-48 hours, they are maintenance-free. The most you may have to do is run a clean spoolie through them to redirect the lashes if you’ve slept on your face!

This is an awesome service for the ones who like to spend a little extra time on self-care so they can have a low-maintenance look all month!

Other people who can benefit from this are people who wear glasses and their lashes are always hitting their lenses. Curling the lashes up can really help to make sure your glasses stay clean.

If you have lashes that curl into your eye (especially on the outer corners), a lash lift can help redirect those lashes to stay out of your eyes for the day. Most people love this as it gives a really pretty curl at the end!

If you’ve ever thought about a lash lift and tint, Simply Sugared Aesthetics is the place to go! Certified in Elleebana One Shot, we use the best products and techniques to give the best quality lifts for the best price. If you break it down, $95 for a lift and tint that lasts 6 weeks, that’s $15/week for beautiful lashes. If results last 8 weeks, that’s only $11/week! What a steal!

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

10/21/23

Along with lashes and sugaring, professional teeth whitening can help you to achieve a low-maintenance look. Around 2-4 treatments per year is all that’s needed to have the best smile in town!

The light used in this tray-based whitening system is LED, not UV, so there are no harmful rays while you sit during your treatment. Treatment times are between 30 minutes and 60 minutes which is less than other systems.

The tray helps to keep the whitening gel in place and gives a cushion so you don’t clench.

Clients with surface stains could start at the Silver Package and upgrade to Gold if they think they want to go whiter. Clients with stains that have accumulated over time should start with the Gold Package unless you have sensitive teeth/have not professionally whitened before. Once you know how your teeth react to the Silver Package, you can upgrade to the Gold Package.

Teeth whitening is awesome for the holiday season coming up. If you will be taking pictures with family or going on vacations, this can help save you time in the morning with whitening strips and trying to get your teeth white enough before picture time. Results can last 2-5 months and can achieve 2-5 shades whiter in one treatment. Obviously, everyone is different and results cannot be guaranteed.

Simply Sugared Aesthetics offers a goodie bag after your treatment as well! It includes a travel-size Sensodyne toothpaste and an on-the-go whitening pen to keep using at home daily for best results. We are always available for follow-up questions and guidance. This value cannot be beat in Denver!
